ECU Joondalup v NTC – Preview

Posted on May 4, 2012 in 'News'

ECU Joondalup entertain the Football West National Training Centre at The ECU Arena on Saturday, in week seven of the All Flags Premier League (3pm)

The home side will be looking to win at home for the first time against some of the best young talent in the state, and Coach Salv Todaro knows they will have to be at their best if they want to take the points. “I am pleased with the developing ability of the team to keep working and fighting to the end of every match, this is an excellent trait to have. The team continues to improve and we are looking forward to another tough tussle on Saturday with the NTC boys,” said Todaro.

“We had a game of mixed fortunes last week against the Stirling Lions. I believe that we played some very good Football in the first half and created a couple of very good opportunities that we failed to take full advantage of and let the Lions off the hook, we must learn from this.”

The ECU squad has been bolstered this week with a number of important signings. Tommy Amphlett re-joins the club after being released by Perth Glory last week, and goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s game. Also coming on board is Sorrento pair Shaun Timmins and Dave Calder, Nick Davies, who joins from Morley Windmills and youngster Cameron Burgess, a centre half from The ECU Academy, who is expected to sign for Fulham in July, also comes into the squad.

On-field successes will remain few and far between for the Football West NTC squad, but then again winning games isn’t really the goal for the development squad.

Kenny Lowe was pleased with what his teenage squad achieved last year and for the new season one-time Australia youth international Riley Woodcock returns to line-up alongside the likes of Sam Mitchinson, Storm Roux, Blamo Quaqua, Byron Hudson and Sahr Musa.

There’s no doubt the NTC player group will benefit from this years’ experiences, and with Perth Glory youth coach Gareth Naven at the helm, they will be competitive this season. It’s a been a difficult start for the youngster and they arrive at The Arena after an 8-1 defeat at Perth SC last week, but they will be buoyed after their last visit to the ECU Arena, when they won 4-0.
