A bad day at the Office for ECU as Sorrento hit six – By Tommy Doleman

Sorrento ended their pre-season in emphatic fashion by thumping ECU Joondalup 6-1, though it wasn’t enough as UWA-Nedlands effectively made the tie a dead rubber after a win in the earlier match.

Both sides traded goals in the opening 10 minutes, before Brodie Martin and Jason Mirco gave the hosts a comfortable lead at the break.

A brace early in the second half from Todd Harnwell made the result certain as Steve McDonald added the gloss to finish the scoring before the hour mark.

UWA-Nedlands’ 3-2 win over Quinns earlier in the evening meant that this local derby had nothing riding on it. Danny Cain didn’t mind though, as his firm tackle earned him a place in Hugh Best’s notebook inside two minutes.

Sorrento didn’t take long to get going, and they took the lead after seven minutes when Todd Harnwell turned and shot onto the woodwork, but Shaun Timmins followed up with a simple finish.

ECU’s response was swift, as three minutes later they equalised as Jordan Dodd showed great composure to lift Declan Hargreaves’ long ball over goalkeeper James Morgan and slot into an empty net.

The Gulls defence was breached again shortly after with John Higgins finding acres of space on the left hand side. He delayed his effort though and that allowed Mikey Aspin to get across and make a fine block.

That defensive effort proved very important, as mid-way through the first period, Martin timed his run into the area perfectly to get on the end of McDonald’s nod down to score past Andy Banks.

Then, eight minutes from the break, Jason Mirco picked up the ball just inside the ECU half, weaving his way through several would-be tacklers, before curling a super strike over a helpless Banks.

Stuart Hartmann was stretchered off for ECU Joondalup with a serious looking injury as the visitors night looked set to go from bad to worse, and Sorrento didn’t hold up in the second half as they put the contest to bed before the hour mark.

Todd Harnwell was this time the beneficiary of a good nod-down from McDonald as he made it 4-1, before he linked up with Brodie Martin to head home after the latter’s shot was parried by Banks.

Half a dozen was brought up on 58 minutes when McDonald capitalised on poor defending from a set-piece, and from then on, the game wound down as Sorrento realised they left their efforts in Group A too late.
