ECU Joondalup have appointment Paul ‘Geordie’ Simmons as senior coach for 2012. ECU committee member Adrian Kenny is delighted to have the former ECU coach back at the helm. “Geordie returns to coaching after a few years, and he is rejuvenated and energised about the task ahead of him.

“Having previously taken ECU Joondalup to a league title, Geordie has all the credentials necessary for the next chapter in ECU Joondalup progress.  Geordie is well aware that a solid foundation has been set down by Syd Amphlett, with many very talented youngsters coming through in the next few years,” said Kenny.

Simmons is happy to be back in football at the club he had a great deal of success at. “The season can’t come quick enough, and after three years out of coaching I am extremely excited about the job ahead,” said Simmons.

“I have a special relationship with the club and am delighted to be back in the mix and I couldn’t think of a better club to be part of. With the new clubrooms set to open in February, and the club set to celebrate its 20 year anniversary in 2012, there are going to be some big Saturday afternoons at the campus.”

The 1990 Premier League win was a highlight for Simmons, and it’s something he would like to emulate. “I will never forget the meteoric rise the club made from obscurity to Premier League Champions in no time. It was a roller coaster ride for everyone at the club,” said Simmons.

“Those days are now history and I can’t see another club ever surpassing that achievement. However I would love to rewrite history again with the club. I have had three seasons off and am chomping at the bit.”

Simmons watched a number of ECU games last season and he believes they have a good side and a few changes will improve them in 2012. “I saw the boys quite a lot last year and they are a young side that plays good football. I think we could probably do with a  good wide man and be focused on getting wide, round the back and then delivering the ball into the mixer,” explained Simmons.

He was appointed to the position on Monday night and after discussion with the club he will look to add an assistant in the coming weeks. “I have touched base with a few guys who are all interested in becoming an assistant at the club and now I have been officially appointed I can start making selections,” said Simmons.
