ECU Joondalup travel South on Saturday, for a vital game against Mandurah City in round 21 of the All Flags Premier League at The Hyundai Stadium (3pm)

Syd Amphlett’s side welcome back Scott Blackmore and Mark Tebbutt, but are missing Luke Smith, and former Mandurah defender Ryan McDarby knows the importance of the game, and knows the Dolphins will be desperate for the three points. “It’s a massive game for us now, the way our last few results have gone. We have got to go down there and get something from the game, something we haven’t managed to do the last few seasons, but we are all confident we can get a result and not get sucked into the relegation battle,” said McDarby.

“I enjoyed my season at Mandurah, they gave me the opportunity to play first team football so I’m grateful for that but this weekend is about getting the result we need for Joondalup!”

Amphlett also now the importance of the game and is looking forward to the challenge. “We still believe we have a chance of a top five spot but need to win 3 out of the last 4 games. It’s so close that a defeat could close the gap with the teams below us. I said from the start it was a close competitive league and still believe everyone is capable of beating each other,” said Amphlett.

“Like every other team, if we had converted our chances when on top it could be a different story but one win in the last 6 games has put a bit of extra pressure on us, saying that, the boys have again trained well this week and we have a strong team out tomorrow and if we perform as we have been and convert our chances the chances of making the top 5 might just improve!”

Mandurah earned a point with a last minute equaliser against Bayswater City last week and former ECU striker Garin Collins hopes that fighting performance will edge them to their first home win of the season on Saturday. “A huge game on Saturday and there’s a few of us that have played for both clubs which makes it interesting. We have to win to give us a lifeline and whilst I think ECU, who I’ve played most of my career at, are safe, a win makes them mathematically safe and would all but send us down, so we know the importance,” said Collins.

Ivan Zuvela returned from injury last week and played 90 minutes which is a huge boost for Michael Brazil’s side. They are also boosted by the return of Tom Straker, but lose midfielder Robbie Hamm due to suspension.
