ECU Joondalup kick off their 2012 season in the Football West Night Series, and last week they were drawn in Group A along with Premier League side Sorrento, and second division side’s Quinns FC, and UWA-Nedlands FC. The games will be played at Sorrento’s home ground Percy Doyle reserve (AKA Windy Hill!!) and it all kicks off for Paul ‘Geordie’ Simmons’ side when they meet Quinns FC on Saturday 4th February at 6pm.

In all 31 All Flags State League teams will take part in the bumper tournament, with MySolar Sunday Premier League winners Southern Spirit invited to take the place of the National Training Centre to make it a total of 32 entrants.

It will also be the first time that the new All Flags State League Division Two clubs will be seen in competitive action against their more-fancied rivals.

The new format effectively replaces having separate tournaments for different divisions and will see eight groups of four teams.

Football West General Manager of Competitions and Operations, Keith Wood, is looking forward to the revamped format which was decided upon in conjunction with feedback from the State League Standing Committee.

“We called for expression of interest for venues and are pleased to say that we have nine different hosts for the 2012 tournament,” he said.

“In allocating clubs to groups, we tried to combine geographical convenience and strength of teams to make the groups as even as possible while trying to minimise travel.

“We believe these groups will create more ‘derby’ atmospheres and hope the local community really gets behind next year’s instalment.

“The eight group winners will then progress to the knockout stages where the Quarters, Semis and Final are pre-determined draws like the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup.”
