ECU end the season at Floreat

ECU Joondalup’s 2011 All Flags Premier League season comes to an end when they travel to the E&D Litis Stadium to take on Floreat Athena (3pm)

With the NTC to play in two weeks, this is the final game for points, and will also be the final game for Coach Syd Amphlett, who will step down at the end of the season, and he’s hoping for a similar result that they earned last season at the same venue, when they won 5-1. “We travel to Floreat on Saturday, against whom we always have a tough game and am desperate to go out on a high after so many setbacks this year,” said Amphlett.

ECU are also coming of a heavy defeat against Sorrento last week, but with relegation fears out the window  they will hope to send off Amphlett with the three points,  John Thornley, Scott Bushby and Dale McCulloch will be vital if they are to end the season on a high.

“It was a very disappointing result for us against Sorrento, particularly after dominating the game against Stirling only a week earlier,” said Amphlett.

“It was a technically a very disappointing game with none of the sides very threatening. However we decided to give away a goal within the first 30 seconds and it was all downhill from there. They scored, we dominated. They scored again, we dominated, and it has been the story of our season. Sorrento might see it different – I just thought it was a disappointing game and the only team to turn us over this season has been Balcatta, who were outstanding.”

Athena can still make the finals but they need all three points on Saturday. Floreat were thumped 1-5 at Bayswater City last week, and Coach Ante Kovacevic will be looking for an improvement on Saturday. He will look to Julian Madaschii, Calum O’Connell and James Isaia to turn things around and keep their faint finals hopes alive.
