Sunday 19th May: (Match Report by Stuart van Selm)

On a clear and crisp morning, the sound of coach Banks’ voice reverberated around the Joondalup City football ground as he tried to rouse and motivate his boys.

The team received a quick wakeup call as Joondalup started the better team using large pitch and space to play their long bomb style of football. An early break through the heart of defense saw them 1-0 up within the first 2 minutes, this was followed up a minute later by another goalmouth scrabble which lead to Joondalup’s second goal.

We responded well as Sam burst through but he was quickly outnumbered and his shot went wide.

Joondalup hit back with a 3rd goal as some lose defending saw their big centre forward slot one past goalkeeper Seb. We looked a bit rattled, lost positional awareness and were a bit lose defending, however when we played wide and passed quickly we looked good.

Switching play through Danny and Shade worked well and after some good play down the right flank between Aiki, Matt and Ethan, a defensive error gifted Joon their 4th goal. We stuck to the game plan but their strong defense held us out – Sam’s running, Aston’s determination and a good save from Seb kept Joondalup at bay. Conceding a 5th goal just before half time was as disappointing as the umpire’s behaviour and would test the character of this young ECU side.

Coach Banks changed things up for the second half, Danny moving into defense, Ethan marshalled the midfield, Eddie in goals and Seb up front. Immediately an early chance fell to Aston after good work from Sam –however it was Joondalup who scored first after the ref confused himself with a free kick decision. We didn’t let our heads go down and battled on finding space down the right hand side with Seb, Aston and Ethan combining well.

Our first goal came after Ethan broke through the midfield, had a shot on goal which was saved and Sam swooped to slot in the rebound.

This spurred the lads on and after pilling on the pressure, Seb slotted a second goal with a composed right foot shot into the far corner. We continued to dominate the midfield and Paddy and Shade stood firm in defense and built the counter-attack well. The boys continued to push hard and playing some quality football down the right hand side which set up Ryan for a good shot which was well saved by the Joondalup keeper. Some good work from Shade and Seb then created another chance for Ryan which was again well saved. As ECU pushed forward a Joondalup counter attack saw them create an overlap and unleash a powerful shot which was well saved by Eddie above his head. ECU continued to create chances with Danny coming close, creating corner after corner and strong work from Aiki and Seb.

Although we lost 2-6 against a strong team, we played the better football in the second half and keep on trying when we were down.
