(Photo – Oliver Ford in action) – ECU suffered a rare home defeat to rivals Fremantle United, a disappointing result following their wonderful victory the previous week against league leaders Perth. The first half was mainly forgettable, the home side unable to get to grips with a new formation and the visitors not really taking advantage of it. There were very few chances in the half and it was disappointing considering the amount of good players on display.

The home side played with much more width and balance in the second half and created  a few openings. Liam Hudson had a shot blocked, Brad Jordan shot wide, Ethan Kerridge had a good free kick saved and then, after a goalmouth scramble, Oliver Ford had a header cleared off the line. ECU were not at their fluent best but they were on top but they got caught with a sucker punch, when a Fremantle player raced away on the break to round the ECU keeper to score. The hosts searched for an equaliser but again were caught out in identical fashion, again a breakaway, and again the home defence being caught out and it was 0-2 with just seconds left. To be fair a draw would have been a fair result but the visitors took the only two chances they created in the second half to win the game.

The boys should not be too upset with the result, their first defeat since the opening day of the season and clearly, these two teams plus Perth are way in front of the other teams in terms of ability.
