Rockingham City  1-3  ECU Joondalup – Sunday 2nd June

Photo – Liam Owen in action – After two consecutive disappointing performances, ECU under 13’s returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory against an always big and physical Rockingham side.

In difficult windy conditions, ECU were far more comfortable on the ball and were ahead early when a corner was not cleared properly by the home defence and Luke Salmon scrambled the ball home to make it 0-1.

Five minutes later, defender Ethan Kerridge surged forward and received a fortunate break from a Rocky defender but there was no good fortune about the finish as he despatched the ball superbly into the corner to  make it 0-2.

Back came Rockingham, as series of missed tackles and a clear offside decision ended with a Rockingham forward through on goal and he finished well to bring the hosts back into the game. It didn’t last long though, Luke was fouled in the penalty box and up stepped Kieron Craig to fire home the penalty to make it 1-3 at the break.

Unfortunately there was not much to report in the second half, not because there was no action but due to the amount of injuries the visitors received, this reporter had to leave the relative comfort of the press box to run the line as the original linesman helped out with the injured players.

ECU lost three players to injury, Oliver Ford had left the field early on with a head injury, Luke (hand) and Kieron (knee), all three were to play no further part in the match which left ECU’s resources rather stretched.

Harley Curran forced a good save from the home goalkeeper tipping a shot on to the post and even though the score remained at 1-3, the hosts never really threatened to get back into the game.

A good result against a physical team and hopefully one which restores a bit of self belief back into the boys. They now have two games in two days, cup round v Melville on 8th June and Subiaco in a premier league clash the next day, both at home.
