Sunday 28th July – BAYSWATER 1 ECU Joondalup 5

The game, they say, often starts with the weather, and Sundays’ away game at Bayswater City was no exception. Having suffered couple of days of heavy rain, the muddy grounds at Frank Drago Reserve certainly gave our boys a stern test. Nonetheless, ECU came through with a convincing 5-1 win.

The action was quick and pulsating right from kick off as ECU boys speedily brought the game into Bayswater’s half with the first chance coming after just 3 minutes with Harry’s corner shot passing just behind the goal from the left. Minutes later it was Luke’s turn who, from the left wing, hit a steady ball to the centre of the box only for it to be firmly blocked by Bayswater’s defence. ECU were not to wait long however, for their efforts to be rewarded and after some clever footwork between Aaron and Riley, it paid off with the final crafty dribbling by Riley and that all powerful left boot!

Bayswater though were intent on making their own mark on the game and against the run of play, sent a teasing ball in front of an open goal by the ten minute mark, only to find no-one to finish. ECU noting the start of Bayswater pressure responded with some good one two’s with Nathan and Harry leading to another shot on goal, only to be cleared by Bayswater for yet another ECU corner. A further two more blocked corners proceeded but again time did not wait before us parents were rewarded with another fabulous ECU goal as some fine passing between Joe and Riley lead to goal number two.

ECU continued with the lion’s share of possession with shots being peppered in from the left and right wing. Bayswater fought bravely and diligently to keep ECU out of their half and looked the team happier to hear the first half whistle as ECU kept up their relentless attack.

The second half lead to a quick start by ECU with Luke having a mazy run down the left wing with more one two’s with himself and Riley. Luke then shot just over the bar. Minutes later this was repeated with Luke having even more freedom down the left wing with his next shot just edging behind the net. Bayswater started their own chances as seven minutes into the second half; they tested Matt’s defensive duties with two blocked corners. A solid save from Kai held them at bay but mid-way through the second half, they were to peg one back as a sudden Bayswater break lead to themselves getting on the score sheet.

Bayswater having collected the scent of a comeback fought constant and mightily, the game now becoming open with the slippery pitch leading to a more physical battle in the midfield.

Zac bolted down the line only to see his cross just to go over the bar. The tackles were now coming in thick and fast yet ECU were unlucky not to be 3-1 up by the 17th minute of the second half after an ECU free kick missed everyone in the Bayswater goal mouth. Luckily another free kick shortly after was not to have the same fate as although initially blocked by a Bayswater defender, it fortunately landed to Harry’s feet on the right wing and he gratefully thumped it home! The goalkeeper had no chance.

After some frantic tackling in Bayswater’s half, Riley through balled a beautiful ball picked up by Luke who did what he does best running down the line and finishing a stunning goal in the top corner.

Then immediately after came goal number four with a Riley super shot from the edge of the box.

ECU had it in their pocket and as the clouds started looming in again Riley finished off the day with this trademark header!

The day, the clouds, the mud and the honours all belonged to ECU doing us parents proud once again!
