ECU Joondalup  1-0  Fremantle – Sunday 22nd October

Photo Tom Eijgenhuijsen – A last minute goal gave ECU under 13’s a 1-0 victory over Fremantle at Grindleford Reserve to give them a place in the playoff final where they will play champions, Perth.

It was a very close game played in windy and wet conditions with ECU just about deserving of the win as they finished the better team. Fremantle had most of the early possession without creating too many clear cut chances, Kieron Craig, with a couple of dangerous runs, looked ECU’’s most likely player. The best chance came just before the break, a low cross into the ECU penalty area was smashed against the bar by a Freo forward.

In-between the rain storms in the second half, ECU looked the more settled team, again without creating many chances. Ethan Kerridge went close with a header from a Declan Hudson cross and just when the game looked to be going to penalties, ECU snatched the winner in slightly controversial circumstances. A cross was cleared to the edge of the Freo penalty area where Brad Jordan struck a low shot back towards goal, for some reason the goalkeeper let the ball roll through his hands much to the delight of the ECU players. ECU clearly had a player in an offside position but the referee deemed him not to be interfering with play and overruled the linesman to award the goal.

ECU now takes on Perth in the final, a team who they have already beaten this season. The under 13’s final will be followed by the under 14’s final where ECU will play Melville.
