Sunday 14th April 2013 – Premier League ECU Joondalup 0-1  Perth

It was always going to be a close affair, the two top teams from last season meeting in the first league match of the new season, the play off champions hosting the league champions. The first half was very cagey with lots of possession for both teams in the middle part of the pitch with very little actually created.

Perth’s best effort being a break away, with the Perth player shooting just wide when through on goal. At the other end, Ethan Kerridge stabbed the ball just wide after a goal mouth scramble. Both sides were cancelling each other out, neither were dominating and both goalkeepers had relatively quite half’s.

The second half had a similar pattern with just a few more efforts on goal from both sides, mainly though from long distance. One of these soon paid off when a Perth player picked up the ball outside the penalty box and let fly with a superb dipping strike to give the away team the lead.

Back came ECU, Harley Curren struck the bar from distance, and with the Perth goalkeeper out of position, Luke Salmon directed the rebound towards the goal with his head, only to see the ball hit the post.

ECU then had a penalty claim when Luke went down after a challenge while at the other end ECU keeper, Eddie Cook made a fine save from a good strike by a Perth forward.

So a defeat to start the season but ECU should not be too disheartened, they started the game the stronger and played some nice football in the first half and didn’t receive any good fortune in front of goal. The second half was scrappy and the boys became more anxious after they went behind. They deserved something out of the game though, a draw probably would have been a fair result.
