ECU Joondalup  1-2  Westside – Sunday 4th August

Photo – (James Lawless in action) – After a narrow semi final defeat the day before, ECU under 13’s rounded off a miserable weekend with a home loss against local rivals Westside. This certainly had the feel of a local derby with both teams desperate to win the game. ECU had the majority of the possession and created a number of chances in the first half. James Lawless shot wide, Luke Salmon and Declan Hudson both had shots saved b y the impressive Westside keeper. ECU finally broke the deadlock on 17 minutes, a pass from Luke S played in James L, whose close control was good before he fired low into the corner. There was a warning though for the home side when Westside broke away and hit the bar.

ECU started the second half in the same fashion, Luke S hitting a sweet volley against the bar and Liam Hudson firing wide. Westside then had a goal disallowed, a free kick from long range was ruled out for off side although it was hard to see how the guilty player was interfering with play. This seemed to lift the visitors and when ECU gave the ball away on the edge of their own area, the resulting cross was put away for the equaliser. Suddenly it was a different game and Westside went in front, again a cross was allowed to go across the penalty area for the visitors forward to happily score the winner. ECU created a couple of half chances and put some pressure on but could not break through, what would have been a deserved equaliser on the balance of the whole match.

Full Time – ECU Joondalup  1-2  Westside

A hard defeat to take in light of the possession and chances created, especially in the first half and I think a draw would have been a fair result but to be fair to the visitors, they finished the stronger and maybe had a bit more desire to win this local derby.
