Westside on the wrong side of ECU

Westside on the wrong side of ECU

In a scrappy affair at home the 11s overpowered a spirited Westside team to finish in control with six second half goals. There were some outstanding individual goals but again the boys produced a great team performance and played until the final whistle.

The boys started the game well and Ciaran puts in a great cross but it’s just out of reach. ECU keep the ball and win another corner. Trent’s corner is met at the back post by Ciaran who heads the ball wide. Westside had some early possession and the boys defended a couple of corners well. Evan made a some good tackles to stop Westside.

When the boys had an opening they tried their luck. Ciaran had two shots go wide and Trent had a shot saved. The defence had to be good as Westside were looking dangerous in attack. Josh and Evan kept busy at the back with strong tackles. Kian kept the ball moving forward combining well with Ciaran and Morgan.

Dylan, Josh and Trent passed the ball well trying to open up some gaps in the Westside defence. Ben who has pressured the back three all game puts the ball behind the defence to Dylan whose shot is saved. The last chance of the half goes to Dylan who volleys over the bar.

After a close first half the boys know they have to compete for every ball. Morgan leads by example and wins some 50/50 balls in midfield. Ollie makes a good run and his cross is met by Charlie, but the shot is just over the bar. Jack wins the ball in the air well. The first chance of the half is just wide a great shot from distance by Morgan. Reid is busy clearing the ball. Ciaran and Jack use the ball well and Ciaran’s shot hits the bar.

The ball is cleared by Westside and against the run of play they score. 0-1. The goal seemed to ignite the 11s and within a minute it was 1-1. A great move started by Morgan who finds Ollie, Jack is waiting in space 10 yards out and Ollie finds him. Jack shoots into the corner. Great goal. The Westide team push forward, Josh is great heading the ball out of danger.

Ciaran gets the ball out on the left and his quick thinking sets up Charlie who smashes the ball past the keeper. A great counter attacking goal. 2-1.  The boys have found another gear and Westside have no answers. It’s all ECU, the next goal is another superb individual effort. Morgan controls the ball 15 yards out and shoots into the corner giving the keeper no chance. 3-1.

A goal usually seen in Rio or Barcelona was to follow. Ciaran controls the ball on the left and nutmegs his opponent. He then curls the ball into the top right corner. GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL. 4-1.

The boys were on fire and next it was Dylan with a fantastic run and finish 5-1. With the game coming to an end there was still time for one more. Ollie makes a good run from his own half and puts Ben clear. He still has lots to do but shows great composure to beat the keeper and make it 6-1.

What a great display from the team. In the first half the boys ground down the Westside team and then in the second they stepped up the pace and the opposition had nothing left to give. Great work boys.
