Under 12’s Bow Out In Semi Final

Sunday 12th August – Sorrento  3-0  ECU
ECU under 12’s were beaten in the semi final by Sorrento at Percy Doyle Reserve and, although the scoreline sounds comprehensive, the match was pretty close for the majority of the time. In fact ECU started the sharper team and dominated the opening 15 minutes, so much so that their goalkeeper, Ed Cook, did not have one touch of the ball. It was a contrast in styles with ECU trying to play football as opposed to the long ball game played by the hosts. Early on the visitors had chances to take the lead, the best when Harley Curran struck the bar with a superb free kick, Oliver Ford followed up to head the rebound back towards goal but somehow the home keeper clawed the ball away to deny the visitors.

Against the run of play, the home team broke and were awarded a free kick which they converted to take an undeserved lead. ECU were visibly shaken, Sorrento given an unexpected lift so close to half time.

Half Time – Sorrento  1-0  ECU

The second half was a different story, ECU just couldn’t get going again and were pegged back for long spells. From a Sorrento corner, which ECU had many chances to clear, the ball was knocked back towards goal and agonisingly trickled into the corner to make it 2-0. The away team had to chase the game and were in danger of leaving themselves open to a counter attack and this is what happened when the home winger made it 3-0 with a good finish, ECU disappointed that an obvious hand ball was not spotted in the build up to the goal.

In the end Sorrento deserved their win although the scoreline was very harsh on ECU who played much the better football, especially in the first half. It’s deva vu this weekend as the same two teams meet at the same venue in their premier league clash.

ECU’s three other junior teams all won their respective semi finals and will have a cup final day to look forward to in September. ECU under 12’s must now concentrate on trying to finish in the top 4 play off places.
