Under 12’s Advance to Quarter Finals

Sunday 10th June – Westside  0-5  ECU
ECU under 12’s defeated local rivals Westside to advance to the last eight of the juniors under 12’s cup in horrendous conditions. Pouring with rain and a howling wind blowing straight down the pitch was always going to make it very difficult but the boys worked really hard and managed to play some nice football despite the weather. The opposition were from the division below but were top of their league having won all but one of their games this season.

Playing with the wind behind them in the first half, ECU were permanently camped in Westside’s half and created many chances. The breakthrough came after 10 minutes when Liam Hudson was fouled and up stepped Harley Curran to fire home the penalty. The home side were defending desperately with the goalkeeper in good form but the elements were against them. Kieron Craig finished off a nice move, involving a great pass from Ethan Kerridge to make it 2-0 and it was soon 3-0 when Oliver Ford played in Declan Hudson to finish confidently. Shortly after, Harley found Declan with another good through ball and he scored his second of the match to make it 4-0.

Half Time – Westside  0-4  ECU

Everyone was anxious about the second half despite the lead as the wind and rain were still very strong and we knew that ECU would be under considerable pressure from the home side. The boys defended slightly deeper and kept their shape well and were only put under sporadic periods of pressure and actually managed to create a few chances on the break, Declan being denied a hat trick by a desperate goal mouth clearance. In fact, ECU started to play some really good football, keeping the ball on the ground and looking confident in possession. With 10 minutes remaining, Ethan broke out of defence, released James Lawless with a good through ball and James rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home the make the score 5-0 with a cool finish.

A good result for the boys and a great display especially from the back four in the second half against the wind and the rain, Tom Eijgenhuijsen, Ethan, Liam Owen and Louie Robinson were all superb under pressure. In midfield, Oliver and Brad Jordan were relentless with their work rate. The team defended so well that goalie, Ed Cook was only called upon on a couple of occasions.

Full Time – Westside  0-5  ECU

The boys now await the draw for the quarter finals which are on Friday 22nd June with the next round on Sunday 15th July.
