ECU (under 9’s)  4 –  SORRENTO (under 10’s)  1

On a cold Sunday morning in Joondalup parents and spectators waited on the touchline for a much awaited clash between ECU (under 9’s) and Sorrento (under 10’s).

From the start Sorrento attacked down the right hand side but with a tackle by Euan it put paid to any more advance on goal which won ECU a throw in. From the throw a nice interchange of passing between Aiden and Daniel down the left, this ended with Joe putting in a superb far post cross, which was met by Reece and forced the keeper into a save at the top corner. Sorrento proceeded to lose possession in their half. From the goal kick Reece put a great ball in the middle but no one quite got on the end of it. In the 4th minute Ben battled for the ball and laid a precision pass to Blair who tried to find Daniel but was intercepted by a pressured defence. From the subsequent corner taken by Joe to the back post, Daniel was on hand to slot the ball in the net to make it 1-0 to ECU.

ECU only managed to maintain the lead for 2 minutes when a free kick swung in to the back post, it was only half cleared before Sorrento’s number 10, Jack Le was at hand to beat the keeper from close range. It was a real poachers goal which reminded me of the one’s Ian Rush used to score at Anfield for Liverpool. Just 3 minutes later saw a great interchange between Daniel and Lewis resulting in a great powerful finish from Lewis making the Score 2-1 to ECU.

ECU’s attack was relentless, one particular attack saw Massimo win the ball on the right, he slid it nicely into Lewis who shot powerfully into the top corner only to be saved to the keepers left. ECU were really on top and a cross by Joe saw a shot by Euan go narrowly wide. Wave after wave of sustained pressure saw Massimo and Reece combine nicely down the right which ended in a near post cross which unfortunately ended up in the keepers hands. The ref then blows the whistle to bring the first half to a close ECU 2 – Sorrento 1

The second half started much like the first, a clearance from Sorrento was  headed back by a thumping header from Matthew into Aiden’s path which almost produces another goal. In the 33rd minute, from the goal kick, the visitors lose possession and the ball ends up at Lewis’s feet and no mistake but to make it 3-1 to ECU.

Immediately from the kick off the ball ends up in Sorrento’s penalty box, with a goal mouth scramble Aiden gets the final touch to make it 4-1 to ECU.

From the restart the ball breaks on the right crossed in and Matthew bravely headers the ball away and follows the ball into a tackle. This results in a hand ball in the centre circle. The free kick is launched into the penalty box but is cleared by Euan who storms forward, passes the ball to Blair, then to Lewis who shoots at the keeper who tips the ball onto the crossbar and back into his arms. With some excellent defending by Ben, Euan, and Matthew and a skilful move by Reece pulling off a good save from the keeper right at the end. This bought the game to a close with ECU finishing as the well deserved victors.

ECU 4- Sorrento 1

Another fantastic team performance against a strong Sorrento team which was largely spent in the opponents half so a special mention goes to the defence who didn’t see much of the ball but kept their discipline and their shape. The whole team did an awesome job.

Thanks again to Brian for his fantastic coaching and thankyou to the match referee Nick Ford.
