Bayswater Under 10s 0 – 2 ECU Joondalup Under 9s

This game was unquestionably the hardest game of the season so far. The hosts boasted a big, physical team with a number of technically gifted players. The first half was different to any other half of football played so far. Usually the attackers have many opportunities to show their skill and goal scoring prowess. However this was a game where the lads instead showed their physical and mental strength, their ability to compete in midfield and their admirable defensive qualities. Joe and the defenders defied the odds to keep the score at half time to 0 -0. Ben and Euan in particular were magnificent making last ditch tackles or blocks to keep the powerful Bayswater attackers at bay. Lewis was strong in midfield and Reece showed some good flair and skill on the right wing. Midway through the half Harry broke clear of the defence and ran towards goal only to be stopped as he was about to shoot. Just before half time, Bayswater broke down their right and crashed the ball against the ECU post. That was close but the boys held out …. but only just. Bayswater had been really impressive.

The second half started in much the same way with a monumental battle in midfield and more resolute and determined ECU defending. The Bayswater number 5 caught the eye with his technical ability in midfield and our midfielders battled hard to contain him and his team mates. Suddenly the game changed. For the last 10 minutes ECU took control. Lewis burst through the Bayswater defence and was one on one with the keeper. Lewis went for power but the keeper pulled off a great save. Then a magnificent ball from Lewis put Daniel away down the left flank. Daniel sidestepped the defender leaving him tackling thin air and Daniel was clear. He then immediately hit a magnificent cross to the feet of Massimo who had ghosted into the box from the right wing. Massimo wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth and fired the ball gleefully into the back of the net. What a relief and a truly fantastic goal. 0 -1. The away fans erupted. Suddenly the belief grew and there was only one team in it. Then a fine corner from Massimo was met by a glancing header from Aidan and the ball flew into the corner of the net. 0 – 2.

Final score 0 – 2. The ECU fans were really impressed with Bayswater. After the game we found out that this Bayswater team had never been beaten which puts this result into context. Bayswater were the best team we have played this season by a distance and the scoreline probably flattered ECU a little. However a win is a win and the lads were excellent. They showed a number of different qualities in this game, great defending, resilience, team spirit and a huge determination not to be beaten. The win was at one stage unexpected but we should never write this team off. Time after time they deliver the goods. This result and performance must have given Brian a great deal of satisfaction. Sadly Daniel’s ECU goal scoring run came to an end in this game. He had scored in all 17 ECU games to date this season (the previous 12 league games and 5 friendlies) but in this game he unfortunately drew a blank

More importantly the team march on. PLAYED 13, WON 13.  Next week we host Subiaco, another very good side by all accounts so we await that challenge with baited breath.

Special mentions to Ben and Euan. Both were absolutely colossal in defence. Well played to all of the lads.
