ECU Under 12’s Win Balcatta Cup

ECU under 12’s won the Balcatta (Alliance) Cup on Sunday 1st April, continuing the great tradition as this was the fourth year in succession the club has won the trophy. Fifteen of the finest teams in this age group took part over a weekend of matches with ECU just edging out Perth, 3-2, in a thrilling final.

The boys started out playing four group matches on the Saturday, defeating East Fremantle 9-0, Rockingham 3-1, Quinns 2-0 and drawing 0-0 with Sorrento, in the process finishing second in the group.

Even though the results were good, the performances were below par and it was vitally important to start well in the quarter final, the next day against Inglewood. ECU looked much sharper and had most of the possession but were shocked by a long range effort to trail 0-1 at the break.

Even thought they were behind, they kept playing good football and were rewarded when they scored three late goals to win the game deservedly, 3-1.

ECU found themselves 2-0 ahead at half time in the semi-final against Fremantle United but the opposition scored late on which made for a nervy finish but the boys held on to play Perth in the final.

Having played six games in two days and playing on Balcatta’s big first team pitch, the game started slowly with ECU controlling more of the ball. Kieran Craig put ECU 1-0 ahead with a neat finish but Perth equalised just before half time.

Harley Curran put ECU back in front with a fine long range strike only for Perth to come back again to level the scores with just a few minutes left. Both sides looked tired and Perth seemed to be the team on the ascendancy when, with two minutes left, Harley Curran scrambled home the winner.

It was a great achievement by the boys as they managed to defeat five premier teams in the process, making a mockery of the decision to place them in division two of this year’s league competition.

Thanks to all the players, Eddie Wood, Keiran Craig, Tom Eigenhuijsen, Liam Hudson, Brad Jordan, James Lawless, Harley Curran, Tyler Uglow, Oliver Ford, Declan Hudson and Lewis Robinson, with a special mention to Declan Hughes and the four younger boys who helped us out, Ciaran Bramwell, Morgan Cooper, Evan Gurney and Liam Owen, who all made an outstanding contribution over the weekend.
