ECU 3-2 Sorrento – Sunday 15th April 2012 – Under 12’s – Division 2

ECU hung on to win the first game of the new season against a good Sorrento side and this was always going to be a close game as both sides fought out a goalless draw in the recent Balcatta Cup competition.

Both sides started well and it was the home side who went in front on 5 minutes when Declan Hudson made a great interception and fed the ball down the wing to his twin brother Liam. His cross was met on the volley by Harley Curran for a superb finish. Sorrento still managed to have a lot of possession but failed to create many chances.

On 15 minutes it was 2-0, Brad Jordan slid through a great pass to Liam Hudson who finished with confidence. Sorrento still came back and ECU defender Tyler Uglow was on hand to make a tremendous clearance when a Sorrento player was just about to score. Just before half time, the home team scored their third when James Lawless ran on to a through ball and finished well. ECU went into the break 3-0 ahead which slightly flattered them but the clinical finishing was the difference between the two teams.

Half Time ECU 3-0 Sorrento

The second half was even with Sorrento gradually getting on top. Despite this, the home defence kept their shape well and repelled everything thrown at them. After 15 minutes the away team got their reward when their winger slotted home to make the score 3-1. Suddenly they had a spring in their step although the game should have been finished off when Kieron Criag failed to finish off a good ECU move.

Rather than the score being 4-1, Sorrento went straight down the other end and were awarded a penalty which they scored from. It was now 3-2 with a few minutes left.

With seconds left Sorrento failed to convert a good opportunity from a free kick and the home side held on to win 3-2. It was a close contest and Sorrento will feel agrieved not to take something from the game, as far as ECU are concerned, the back four (Tyler Uglow, Liam Owen, Kieran Coyne and Declan Hudson plus goalkeeper, Eddie Cook) were all superb when under increasing pressure.
