ECU 9’s verses Whitfords

On a beautiful winter’s morning, ECU under 9’s playing at home, took on Whitfords city.

This game looked very one-sided with Whitfords having both a height advantage and a previous friendly victory over ECU to their credit. This however did not deter the ECU boys from setting about dismantling Whitfords from the kick off.

As the whistle blew, ECU went straight down to the Whitfords goal and laid siege to it and this pressure almost paid off in the second minute when Lewis hit the crossbar with a tremendous shot which sent out their message of intent.

Within a couple of minutes ECU were in front with Massimo and Reece working well to set up Daniel who fired in an opener from a couple of meters.

The game started to settle down with Whitfords coming back into it and pushing a little bit further forward.

When Whitfords did attack the ECU goal, they were met by a rock solid defense, which consisted of Euan, Ben and Joe.

With Aidan having to make a few minor saves in goal, it was all going to plan for coach Mclatchie.

ECU were looking to add to their massive seasonal goal difference and the second goal came after a clearance out of defense by Euan which found Reece, who neatly tucked the ball into the net. 2-0.

With a couple of goals the boys were looking composed and settled with Matthew, Regan and Lewis playing both a defensive and attacking game from the midfield.

The coach decided to make a couple of substitutions to freshen things up and as the half ended, ECU looked the better side.

As our semi-professional referee Gary blew for the start of the second half, it was obvious that the coach was aiming to add to the boys score.

With Reece, Massimo, Daniel and Blair all looking to add to the goal tally, it was Lewis who got the third. Blair worked some space in the box before laying it off to Lewis who turned and smashed it home. 3-0.

As the second half rolled on, Whitfords finally nearly scored. The goal threat was extinguished by Ben who cleared the ball off the line to the dismay of the Whitfords players.

With a very dominant skillful display, ECU should have been rewarded with more goals but a fantastic effort by the Whitfords goalkeeper kept the score respectful.

There was however a twist in the tale as the game came to an end, a tremendous volley by the Whitfords number 5 left the defense and goalkeeper rooted to the spot with no chance of stopping the Whitfords player’s effort.

A lesson learnt, as a few lads missed out on their clean sheet bonus.

Full time 3-1
