Under 10 North Blue – ECU Joondalup U9’s 1 v 4 Perth Soccer Club

Despite dominating possession for large parts of the game, the ECU U9’s went down 4-1 in an encouraging first outing for the youngsters, against a physically stronger Perth Soccer Club in Round 1 of the Optus Small Sided Football Under 10 Division North Blue.

ECU went straight on the attack from the kick off and were rewarded with a corner in the very first minute following a terrific strike from midfielder Bhudia, which was turned behind by the Perth goalkeeper.

Always comfortable in possession, ECU’s slick passing game continued to cause the Perth defence problems and a clever jinking run by Leonard on the right wing saw him beat two defenders before cutting inside and unleashing a ferocious shot which just cleared the crossbar. In the tenth minute Casimir-Brown received the ball on the edge of the Perth box and, following a neat turn, rode two challenges before slotting the ball goal wards only to see his shot roll behind for a goal kick.

As the first half wore on, Perth began to find their feet and managed to penetrate an otherwise solid ECU defence – Gilsenan and Ford proving to be a solid combination – and on the 15 minute mark had their first real shot at goal, comfortably saved by ECU’s ‘keeper, Nathan Rhodes. This only spurred on the home team and on 20 minutes they took a deserved lead, Crompton finishing calmly after the Perth defence failed to clear their lines.

Perth started the second half the stronger of the two teams and shortly after the re-start a speculative lob over the top saw the ball fall kindly to the Perth striker whose shot found the back of the net to bring the scores level. Their lead was doubled 5 minutes later when, again, ECU failed to deal with a ball pumped into the area. A goal mouth scramble at the other end of the pitch saw Gilsenan’s shot sail agonisingly over the bar. The home team struggled to find the fluency with their passing and fell further behind on 24 minutes as Perth broke up an ECU attack and countered quickly before scoring past the stranded ECU ‘keeper to make it 3-1. Just before the final whistle, a goalkeeper error gifted Perth another chance and the striker coolly slotted home to make the final score a lopsided, 4-1.
