Sunday 03rd July 2011 – OSSF U10 North Blue

Round 9 – Bayswater City SC 0 v 7 ECU Joondalup U9’s

With another seven goal haul tucked away under their belt, the ECU under 9’s are approaching the midway point of the Optus Small Sided Football Under 10 North Blue league season in strong position.

It was difficult to foresee such a one sided score line, as the first half, whilst producing plenty of good attacking football from both teams, only saw a single goal. Despite missing a couple of players through injury, ECU were, typically, the quickest out of the blocks and the tenacious Dayan Bhudia put the Bayswater defence on notice in the 5th minute, firing a shot just wide of the upright following some wing wizardry down the right flank. The Bayswater ‘keeper did however have a sign of things to come on 16 minutes. Some great passing through the midfield involving Bhudia, Theo Gilsenan and a strike on goal by Dylan Leonard saw the ‘keeper fail to claim the ball and only some last ditch defending prevented the youngsters from taking an early lead.

Bayswater deployed their route-one tactic effectively throughout the first half and their two forwards presented a threat every time the ball was lumped forward. With 1 minute of the first half remaining, ECU stepped up the pressure and was awarded a corner which Leonard swung into the heart of the penalty area. The Bayswater defence could only half clear and the ball fell invitingly to Bhudia on the edge of the box and his sweetly struck shot cannoned back off the bar into the path of a grateful Kurt Crompton to put ECU 1 up on the stroke of halftime.

If stand in coach Nick Ford could bottle up the contents of his half time team talk and pass it on to the ECU first eleven, then Joondalup would undoubtedly boast a champion team, as the second half performance from the under 9’s was simply breathtaking.  The first 5 minutes of the half saw ECU put the game out of sight with 3 quick goals. Joe Hobson flicked in number 2 at the near post following a great cross from Leonard on 24 minutes and Bhudia smashed in identical long range shots on 28 and 30 minutes – both efforts dipping over a stranded Bayswater ‘keeper. With the score line at 4-0, the home team dropped one of their forwards back into midfield to try and combat the fluid movement of Gilsenan, Bhudia and Harry Blunt but were undone again on 35 minutes as ECU turned defence into attack with Freddie Sadler putting the finishing touch to some great work by little Joe Hobson to make it 5-0.  Despite missing Nathan Rhodes through injury, Sadler himself adopted the role of “The Hammer” and unleashed a supersonic strike on 45 minutes which sailed into the top corner for his second and ECU’s 6th of the game.

In a final flurry, Mathew MClaughlin was given the nod to push further up field and was the happy recipient of a fantastic cross by Leonard, rising majestically to head in his first goal of the campaign and to seal his teams’ 7th.
