Sunday 10th July – ECU U11’s 2-0 Balcatta – By Nick Ford

ECU under 11’s got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over a physically bigger Balcatta team at home on Sunday and it was important to do so after their defeat at the hands of league leaders Stirling the week before.

On a cold winter’s morning, the home side started the brighter, had most of the possession but failed to create many clear cut chances, in fact, only a couple of half chances were created in the first 15 minutes. Firstly, after a good run down the right and cross by Brad Jordan (in an unfamiliar right back role), the ball fell to Liam Hudson whose effort just went over the bar. Then Brad found himself in a good position on the edge of the Balcatta area but his shot was saved comfortably by the away goalkeeper.

On 18 minutes the home side took a deserved lead when Harley Curran battled for the ball in midfield, held off an opposing player and clipped the ball through to James Lawless on the edge of the box and without breaking stride, James volleyed superbly over the head of the goalkeeper. You could see how the goal meant to his team mates as they all celebrated enthusiastically.

James could have doubled his total, two minutes later, when he failed to get good contact on an Ethan Kerridge corner and headed wide.

Half Time – ECU  1-0  Balcatta

The majority of the second half continued in the same pattern as the home side dominated possession but could not score the elusive second goal to ease the tension of all those watching on the sidelines. In fact, Balcatta nearly equalised when Kyle McDonald pulled off a good save when an away forward was through on goal and Kieran Coyne was well placed in hooking the ball away from danger from the rebound.

The home side then created a couple of good chances, Ben Bates had a low drive saved by the goalie and then Kieran Craig fired just wide. With five minutes remaining, ECU made the game safe when Liam notched the second goal. Oliver Ford won the ball in midfield and fed Harley who played the ball down the right wing to Liam. His pace was too much for the full back, he cut in from the right and clinically slotted the ball past the Balcatta keeper to make the score a deserved 2-0 to ECU.

Overall it was a good performance against a well organised, strong opponent and an important result against a team who have only dropped points against the top teams this season.

The boys now have a two week holiday break before they return away to lowly Floreat on Sunday 24th July.
