Sunday 21st August 2011 – OSSF U10 North Blue – Round 13

ECU Joondalup U9’s 1 v 7 Balcatta SC

Despite being narrowly beaten in the reversed fixture earlier in the season against an impressive Balcatta outfit, the confidence gained in that match seemed a million miles away as ECU U9’s were thumped 7-1 at home – their heaviest defeat to date in the Optus SSF Under 10 Division North Blue.

The early signs were promising as both teams had good spells of possession, created space and played a neat passing game without any real end product and the U9’s were not at all overawed against a more physical opposition. However, a lapse in concentration in defence on 14 minutes allowed Balcatta to capitalise fully and take the lead with an easy tap in. Just a minute later, Nathan Rhodes found half a yard in the centre of the park and was given just enough room to turn and unleash another trademark strike from distance, giving the Balcatta ‘keeper no chance. At 1-1 going into the half time break, the game was perfectly poised.

The start of the second half saw both teams jostling for possession with neither midfield completely dominating play. Balcatta were the first to strike however and doubled their lead on the half hour mark as a speculative shot from just outside the ECU box somehow managed to elude a line of defenders and an unsighted ‘keeper. Again, ECU tried to soldier on and Rhodes this time slotted a delightful through ball to Dylan Leonard who had made a darting run down the left. His first time strike however was hit straight at the Balcatta stopper. The away team took no time at all in turning defence into attack and were awarded a dubious penalty on 32 minutes; defender Ben Ford adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. The spot kick was duly converted and the 3-1 lead gave Balcatta another gear.

ECU were being pegged back further and further into their own half and struggled to deal with the physicality of the away teams attacking style. Inevitably, Balcatta scored again to make it 4-1 on 35 minutes as a cross to the near post was innocuously flicked on and the ball somehow crept in at the far post. A poor clearance by the ECU ‘keeper gifted Balcatta their fifth on 40 minutes.

A change to the ECU line up couldn’t stop the onslaught and it was 6-1 on 45 minutes as again the Balcatta midfield carved up a static ECU defence. A minute before the end a superb long range strike from a Balcatta midfielder summed up their dominance to make the final score 7-1.
