Sunday 14th August 2011 OSSF U10 North Blue - Round 12

Subiaco AFC 2 v 2 ECU Joondalup U9’s

It was the home team who walked away with the biggest smile after snatching a surprising draw from the brink of defeat on a cold gloomy Sunday morning in Subiaco.

ECU started the brighter of the two teams and took full advantage of their early dominance by grabbing the lead on 5 minutes when Kurt Crompton clinically slotted a half volley past the Subiaco ‘keeper following a Harry Blunt corner. The windy conditions made for a tough battle through the midfield and both teams were struggling to pass the ball with any sort of rhythm. ECU were denied a golden chance in the closing stages of the half as Dylan Leonard cut inside and drilled a low shoot  towards the bottom corner only for the ball to clip the upright and bounce agonisingly wide for a goal kick.

The slender lead ECU took into the second half wasn’t proving to be a comfortable buffer and Subiaco were slowly starting to create a few chances of their own. Defensive lapses in the back third also allowed the home team to grow in confidence, but their forwards couldn’t maximise their opportunities. As the game ebbed and flowed, ECU took what they thought was a match winning 2-0 lead on 20 minutes when Wesley Casimir-Brown pounced on a rare Subiaco defensive mix up and smashed the ball home into an empty net.

Rather than stop crying your heart out and accept the inevitable, Subiaco were undeterred and amazingly snatched a goal back straight from the kick off as ECU again switched off. At 2-1, the final 5 minutes were frantic with both teams looking to attack. It was ECU who was looking the most likely as both Blunt down the right flank and Leonard down the left got in behind a tiring Subiaco defence on a number of occasions but the ball couldn’t be forced home by the ECU front men.

With only 2 minutes remaining on the clock, Subiaco broke up another ECU attack in the centre of the park and played a high cross field ball into the path of a Subi forward whose neat first touch enable him to get a clean shot away from all of 15 yards. The ECU ‘keeper could only watch as the ball slammed into the top left hand corner to bring the scores level at 2-2.  Despite pushing for the winner all the way to the final whistle, the U9’s had to settle with hard fought draw.
