Sunday 28th August 2011 – OSSF U10 North Blue – Round 14

Floreat Athena 0 v 9 ECU Joondalup U9’s

On the back of a couple of wayward performances and results in the past few weeks, ECU bounced back in emphatic style, smashing nine unanswered goals past a hapless Floreat Athena in the Optus SSF Under 10 Division North Blue.

In what was a much needed confidence booster, the manor in which the U9’s played was equally as pleasing as the score line. The slick passing and movement of the midfield which was so prevalent earlier in the season again re-surfaced and a new look back line reinforced a steely determination.

Harry Blunt had the measure of his opposite number straight from kick off and crafted three opportunities in the opening 10 minutes – the closest effort clipping the top of the bar. It was a Blunt corner which led to the opening goal on 12 minutes as his deep cross fell at the feet of Joe Hobson who made no mistake from close range. Blunt again got the better of the Athena full back on 16 minutes and squared an inch perfect ball to Hobson who gratefully notched his second of the game.

Floreat were struggling to live with the pace of the ECU passing and when an opportunity did arise they were quickly charged down by a rampant midfield. Hobson secured his 5 minute hat trick on 17 minutes as again he slotted home another through ball from Blunt following some excellent work by Theo Gilsenan through the middle. It was Gilsenan himself who helped himself to his first goal of the season a minute before the break as his well timed run saw him meet Dylan Leonards cross from the left to make the score 4-0.

ECU couldn’t wait for the second half to commence and took no time in extending their lead a minute after the re-start, the only surprising statistic being Nathan Rhodes having to wait 26 minutes to unleash the hammer – clinically despatching a long range effort to make it 5-0.

In an unfamiliar role at the heart of the ECU defence, Wesley Casimir-Brown linked up with Mat McLaughlin and led the line superbly well, both players oozing calmness and their thoughtful passing created many opportunities for ECU to build wave after wave of attacking opportunities. Gilsenan grabbed his second and his teams sixth of the game with a sweet half volley following a great run and cross by the skilful Leonard.  Harry Blunts tireless running and tough tackling was rewarded on 32 minutes as he eventually got himself on the scoresheet with a quality header from a Rhodes corner. A poor goal kick on 37 mins by the Athena ‘keeper saw the ball fall at the feet of a grateful Rhodes who clinically despatched the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal to make it 8-0 and a well deserved solo effort by Leonard in the last minute of the game wrapped up proceedings at Britannia Reserve.
