OSSF U10 North Blue - Round 4 - Sunday 29th May 2011

Balcatta Soccer Club 4 v 3 ECU Joondalup U9’s (By Stu Gilsenan)

Some might say that if points were awarded for energy, endeavour and team spirit then the ECU U9’s would surely be title contenders. Despite going down 4-3, the youngsters more than held their own against a physically stronger and well organised Balcatta SC at Grindleford Reserve.

In a tight encounter, it was the home team who struck first, a hopeful cross into the box not dealt with by the ECU defence and the ball fell invitingly to a Balcatta striker who tapped the ball home from close range.

Undeterred, ECU gathered themselves quickly and, following some neat passing, forced a corner in the 5th minute. Wesley Casimir-Brown swung the ball in to the near post and Dayan Bhudia’s sweetly struck shot was tipped over the bar by the ‘keeper. A well rehearsed free kick on the edge of the Balcatta area was pulled back by Nathan Rhodes and Dylan Leonard’s first time strike rifled goalwards only to see it diverted wide by the out stretched hand of a defender; the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. It was Leonard himself who stepped up and placed the resulting spot kick high into the top right hand corner giving the ‘keeper no chance.

Balcatta went 2-1 ahead in the 15th minute following a neat counter attack which saw number 11 race clear before burying the ball past the oncoming ECU stopper. As the game approached half time, both teams were creating quality goal scoring opportunities but it was a wonder strike from Kurt Crompton which saw his cross-field shot cannon in off the far post to level the scores.

Balcatta again took the early advantage in the second half when the impressive number 8 latched onto a loose ball and smashed his shot into the roof of the ECU goal to make it 3-2. The see-saw battle continued and the scores were again level on 32 minutes when Theo Gilsenan burst through the midfield before threading an inch perfect ball to Casimir-Brown who beat one defender, squared to Joe Hobson who clinically side footed the ball through the ‘keepers legs to finish what was undoubtedly the move of the game.

Despite a couple of late chances, ECU were struggling to find an elusive winner and were cruelly denied at least a well deserved point in the 43rd minute when Balcatta again broke quickly on the counter and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
