UWA Nedlands  1-9  ECU Under 11’s – Sunday 4th September
After last week’s impressive display against Woodvale, ECU under 11’s finished the season in style with a resounding victory against lowly UWA Nedlands. The away side played some attractive football at, probably, the most attractive venue in Perth (on the bank of the Swan River) and even though the game was played on a small pitch, ECU found enough space show off their ball skills.

The visitors went ahead in the first minute when a Luke Antonio cross was headed against the cross bar by Brad Jordan, the ball was cleared to the edge of the penalty area where Oliver Ford drilled the ball back low into the the corner of the net. It was soon 2-0 to the visitors, Luke, this time with a good through pass, and Kieran Craig with a good finish.

Soon after, Kieran crossed from the right to the far post where Liam Hudson, coolly controlled the ball and finished superbly into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. Against the run of play, UWA broke away and the away defence was caught square and the home forward finished well to reduce the score to 1-3.

Just before half time, Declan Hudson went on a good run down the wing and his cross was dropped by the goal keeper, Kieran pounced to make it 4-1 at the break.

Two minutes into the second half, and after another good run by Declan, Harley Curran finished confidently into the corner to make it 5-1. ECU were playing some good football and creating chances at will. James Lawless had a good shot saved by the UWA keeper and Oliver was just wide with another good effort. From the resulting goal kick, Oliver headed the ball back into Kieran’s path, his shot was saved but Luke followed up to score to make the score 6-1.

Minutes later the home defence had chances to clear the ball, they didn’t, and James Lawless volleyed superbly past the helpless keeper, 7-1 and then Harley then finished off a good move to make it 8-1.

Kyle McDonald, the ECU goal keeper was allowed to play up front for the last 5 minutes of the game and was desperate to score as his team mates were trying their best to accommodate. With 2 minutes left, left full back, Louie Robinson picked the ball up on the edge of the opposing penalty box, swung his trusty left foot and the ball flew into the top corner and a fitting way to end the season.

Overall it’s been a very good season, the boys have finished as runners up, playing against boys a year older who are generally much bigger and more physical. The only games they lost were against the eventual league winners Stirling (both 1-2) and the boys played well in both games. The season record is below.

Played 16
Won 13
Drew 1
Lost 2
For 65
Against 13
Position 2nd

Harley Curran finished as top goal scorer with 12 goals.

A big thanks must go to John and Chris Coyne for their excellent coaching throughout the season. Even though the season has ended, the boys will still train to prepare for October’s Bunbry Competition.
