Round 4- Sunday 29th May 2011: – Westside 3   3 ECU

Round 4 took ECU under 10’s away to Westside at a windy MacNaughton Park.

Against the breeze in the first half, ECU started with four at the back. In front of Kade Tombides in goal were Aaron and Ben Hinshelwood at the heart of defence with Harry Moses at right back and Kian McGuigan on the left.

After three minutes good work from Trent Ostler on the right hand side provided ECU with the first corner of the game.

Charlie Gent stepped up to take the corner, driving a perfect ball to the edge of the Westside penalty area. Aaron Hinshelwood rose above the defence to head home into the top corner of the net.

Four minutes later another good corner from Charlie was met by Trent, who headed the ball into the keeper’s arms.

The second goal of the game came in the ninth minute when Morgan Cooper fed Trent who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.

ECU were passing the ball well against the wind and any attacks by Westside were dealt with by Kade in goals, anticipating the long ball well.

A crucial clearance by Kian in ECU’s penalty area allowed Morgan to pick out Charlie who then played a neat 1/ 2 with Trent to score ECU’s third goal.

In the fifteenth minute Westside pulled a goal back with a good individual effort by one of their two number 10’s..!?.

Etienne Charette came on for Kian and slotted into the left hand side of midfield with Ciaran Bramwell dropping to left back. A loose ball in the middle of the field was met by Ciaran but his shot flew wide of the goal.

It was end to end football, with Westside going close from 10 yards after twenty minutes. Oliver Sadler replaced Morgan to take up a position on the right hand side of midfield, Trent switching to the centre.

Great defensive work from Harry enabled Oliver to produce a fine run down on the right wing before being fouled and bringing an end to an excellent first half performance.

Half time Westside 1- ECU 3.

Westside started the second half strongly. Morgan produced a number of excellent tackles as the pressure on the ECU defence intensified.

Five minutes into the second half Westside’s goal keeper pulled off a string of good saves. Trent, Charlie and Ciaran couldn’t find a way past the Keeper and the resultant break by Westside produced their second goal.

Only a fantastic double save from Kade after 33 minutes prevented Westside from drawing level.

Aaron made way for Kian and Ben came on for Harry. Morgan dropped into the centre of defence and was instrumental in keeping Westside out with a last ditch tackle on 37 minutes to deny the home team a shot on goal.

Etienne was working hard on the left hand side to link up with Ciaran in midfield.

With 10 minutes to go Ben showed good skills to feed Trent whose shot went close from distance.

A minute later and Trent again produced a great strike which the keeper saved.

Another ECU chance was created after Oliver’s break down the right wing and squaring the ball to Charlie, whose first time shot went over the bar.

In the 21st minute Morgan won yet another tackle in defence, before releasing Oliver on the right wing. Oliver then picked out Trent whose shot was just wide of the post.

On 22 minutes Westside managed to breach the ECU defence to snatch a late equaliser.

Well played boys- a great effort.

Final Score: Westside 3   ECU 3
